ABE 2: Fundamentals of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering II

Principles of farm power; crop production and processing to actual field operations. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st and 2nd semesters. Prerequisite: PHYS 3.

ABE 50: Refrigeration and Cold Storage

Refrigeration process and cycle; psychrometrics; cooling load calculations, cold storage system and components. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st and 2nd semesters. Prerequisite: ENSC 15.

ABE 51: Crop Processing I

Principles and practices in the primary processing, handling and storage of agricultural crops. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st and 2nd semesters. Prerequisite: ABE 50.

Undergraduate Specialized Courses

ABE 150: Materials Handling

Principles and design of materials handling equipment in agricultural processing, handling of farm products for transport. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st semester only. Prerequisites: ABE 51 and ABE 40.

ABE 151: Crop Processing II

Principles and practices in size reduction and consolidation, mechanical separation, mixing and expelling, evaporation and dehydration. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st and 2nd semester. Prerequisite: ABE 51.

ABE 152: Crop Processing Plant Design and Management

Principles and practices in plant design; process and economic analysis; plant operation and management. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 computation); credit 3 units. Offered 2nd semester only. Prerequisites: ABE 151 and IE 150.

ABE 153: Rheology of Biological Materials

Mechanical properties, flow characteristics and mechanical damage of plant and animal products. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st  semester only. Prerequisite: ENSC 18.

ABE 154: Fuels and Combustion for Applications in Agriculture and Biosystems

Properties of fuel, theory of combustion; burners and furnaces; design of heating systems. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 1st semester only. Prerequisites: ENSC 14a or ENSC 15.

ABE 155: Intermediate Thermodynamics in Agriculture and Biosystems

Reversible and irreversible processes and cycles, energy availability; real gases; thermodynamic relations of binary mixtures. 3 hrs a week (class); credit 3 units. Offered 2nd semester only. Prerequisites: ENSC 14a or ENSC 14.

ABE 156: Intermediate Refrigeration in Agriculture and Biosystems

Absorption refrigeration, thermoelectric cooling, cryogenics, miscellaneous refrigeration processes. 3 hrs a week (class); credit 3 units. Offered 1st semester only. Prerequisite: ABE 50.

ABE 200: Undergraduate Thesis

Credit 6 units. Prerequisite: Consent of Instructor.

ABE 200A: Practicum

Credit 6 units. Prerequisite: Consent of Instructor.

ABE 157: Postharvest Engineering of Perishable Crops
Engineering aspects of postharvest handling systems and packinghouse operations for perishable crops. 5 hrs a week (2 class, 3 lab); credit 3 units. Offered 2nd semester only. Prerequisites: HORT 109 and ABE 50.
 
Course Goal
For the students to have an appreciation of the engineering aspects behind postharvest handling and storage of perishable commodities, and the ability to develop postharvest handling tools, equipment, and facilities for various horticultural commodities
